Lake Isabella Windsurfing Wiki

Lake Isabella is a favored spot of many wind surfers for many reasons.

Due to it's location in the high desert, excellent wind conditions are created almost daily.

On most weekends and especially weekdays, there's almost no competition for surface area on the lake for them to enjoy the sport.

The two favored areas for launching are the Auxilliary Dam and the Old Isabella Rd. Campsites. While it is their favorite, they "fondly" refer to the campsite at Old Isabella Rd. as "The Ghetto" because it is an undeveloped site with only one porta-potty . Windsurfers are not deterred though because of the excellent conditions for the sport and the convenience of camping with their gear right next to the lake. They come here for the sport, not for the toilet. If you just want to surf though, the Old Isabella Rd. and Auxilliary Dam camp sites are excellent launch locations and you can always book a room from the selection of hotels and motels at KernValleyLodging.com or if your with a group, check out KernValleyCabinRentals.com

Perfect conditions for wind surfing! < < < < Seasoned Wind Surfer Brandon VonGuenthner is enjoying the sun, wind and waves at Lake Isabella's "Old Isabella Rd." campsite. He rates the surfing conditions at Lake Isabella as one of his favorite spots. One of the best features of wind surfing at Lake Isabella is that you can camp right next to the water with your equipment making him feel more secure at night. What I think he really meant is he can get on the water first thing in the morning without having to haul his equipment! He and his family have been travelling from Thousand Oaks and Orange County to the Kern Valley for recreational activity including wind surfing, mountain biking in Keyesville and of course, fishing in Lake Isabella for about 20 years now and is sure he will be returning!
